Straight-through processing (STP)

Straight-through processing (STP) is handling a transaction end to end with no manual intervention. In lending, an application that is captured, assessed, decided and funded automatically has been processed straight through. A higher STP rate means lower cost and faster decisions.

Automation with no manual touch

Straight-through processing, usually shortened to STP, describes a transaction or application that passes from start to finish through automated systems without any manual intervention. In lending, an application that is straight-through is captured, verified, assessed, decisioned and fulfilled by software and data alone, with no human keying, checking or re-working along the way. The customer experiences a single continuous journey; behind the scenes, each step hands cleanly to the next.

The term originated in payments and securities settlement, where the goal was to remove the manual re-keying that caused errors and delay. The same principle now applies across lending, onboarding and account servicing: wherever a process can be defined by clear rules and reliable data, it can in principle run straight through.

Why lenders pursue it

The appeal of STP is that it attacks cost, speed and consistency at the same time. Removing manual handling lowers the cost to serve each application and lets volume grow without a matching rise in headcount. It compresses decision times from days to minutes or seconds, which matters because customers increasingly expect an immediate answer. And because the same rules are applied every time, it reduces the variation and error that creep in when cases are handled by hand.

Consistency has a compliance dividend too. An automated decision path records exactly which data and rules produced an outcome, making it far easier to evidence that customers were treated fairly and that lending rules were followed. This auditability is valuable when a firm needs to explain a decision to a customer, an auditor or the regulator.

  • Lower cost to serve per application
  • Decisions in seconds rather than days
  • Consistent application of policy and pricing
  • A clear, auditable record of every decision

What it takes, and where the limits lie

True STP depends on good data and well-designed rules. Clean, verified data at the point of capture, reliable connections to credit reference agencies and, with consent, Open Banking feeds, and a decisioning engine that can resolve each case without human help are all prerequisites. Where data is missing, ambiguous or contradictory, the process cannot safely complete on its own.

The sensible goal is rarely one hundred per cent automation. A mature operation aims for a high STP rate on clear-cut cases while deliberately routing the rest, complex circumstances, signs of vulnerability, borderline affordability or suspected fraud, to a human who can exercise judgement. The measure of a good design is not that nothing is ever touched, but that human attention is reserved for the cases that genuinely need it. Under the Consumer Duty, firms must also be able to show that automated journeys still deliver good outcomes and do not, for example, push a customer towards a product that is wrong for them simply because the path was frictionless.
